There are so many good things about the Sacramento Region that affords a Cyclist some of the most wonderful opportunities to enjoy not just the sport, however it encourages it to become a lifestyle. Yes, I know, there are those who would like to eradicate cycling and cyclists as it interferes with there personal agendas to build more roads sell more cars and get us more dependent on the God of Oil! Ever since Drake's well in Western Pennsylvania the lure of oil has driven men insane. It has sparked much blood shed and even created wealth in places that have literally nothing else of value to offer.
One of the best cycling routes involves the American River bike trail, however somehow this purpose built bike road has been allowed to be over run with joggers, walkers and the like who have not bothered to read the rules that clearly state no pedestrians on the pavement. This is amazing that the Park Rangers refuse to actually warn and enforce this. The next great cycling prospect is the South Canal. This potentially awesome bike corridor has alas been choked and made unsafe by the City of Rancho Cordova. This city really can't understand how to properly install a crossing safe for cyclists. The next is of course the best. The City of Davis. Possibly the best cycling local in any state. Miles of off road bike paths and miles of bike lanes on the surface streets. If you are trying to create a livable workable City with cycling as a viable option, follow their lead in Davis! You can't possibly go wrong.
There are several other options in the area like Rocklin, Roseville, Folsom, and Downtown Sacramento that are all geared to try and provide the access need, no, deserved to cyclists. I would bet that as gas gets more expensive and the credit crunch actually hits in the next 4 to 5 yars that more people will find that health and money wise cycling is a great way to get around. These cities have taken the time to construct design and plan for cycling trails and routes that are very user friendly. That brings us to why some people fear riding.
Too often we hear of cyclist and car accidents, the car never seems to get the blame even in cases where they are clearly at fault. I suspect this is due to a police bias against cycling. I also expect that most people are too ignorant in this State to know that a cyclist has the same rights and responsibilities as a motor vehicle, even though they are not one. The fact remains that Police never enforce the bike lane CVC21200 that was designed to keep cyclists safe. With all these bad things out there I would still rather pedal to work and for fun that be trapped in a metal can, like a sardine?
The fact that we have such a diverse amount of wild life makes cycling an adventure that is always worth the ride. SO what are you waiting for, you just put weight on over the holidays... Get out and ride!!!!! Enjoy you life now, you can't take it with you :)
